What is Estriol?

Estriol is a bioidentical estrogen—a naturally occurring, weak form of estrogen. Unlike estradiol, which is much stronger, estriol exerts milder estrogenic effects and is commonly used in topical formulations to improve skin aging, especially in peri- and postmenopausal women.

When applied topically, estriol can help:

• Reduce fine lines and wrinkles
• Improve skin elasticity
• Enhance hydration and thickness
• Support collagen production

It works by activating estrogen receptors in the skin, which decline with age and hormonal changes, especially after menopause.

Patient Instructions

• Dose: 3 mg estriol topical cream
• How to Apply: 4 pumps once daily (usually applied to the face, neck, or décolleté)
• When to Apply: Ideally at night, on clean, dry skin
• Application Tips:
  • Avoid the eyes and lips
  • Let it fully absorb before applying makeup or sunscreen
  • Wash hands after use

Results typically begin to show after 8–12 weeks of consistent use.

Contraindications

Estriol, though weaker than other estrogens, is still a hormone and carries some risks. Contraindications include:

• History of estrogen-sensitive cancers (e.g., breast, uterine)
• Undiagnosed vaginal bleeding
• Active thromboembolic disorders or history of blood clots
• Liver dysfunction or disease
• Pregnancy or breastfeeding
• Known hypersensitivity to estriol or any ingredients in the cream

Warnings & Monitoring

• Minimal systemic absorption is expected with topical estriol, but hormone-sensitive patients should be cautious.
• If patient reports breast tenderness, spotting, or other systemic estrogenic symptoms, reassess usage.
• May be compounded with other anti-aging ingredients like retinoic acid or hyaluronic acid for enhanced benefits (depending on clinic/pharmacy protocol).

Patient Counseling Points

• This is not a substitute for systemic HRT.
• Always use as directed. More is not better and may lead to hormonal imbalance.
• Report any signs of irregular bleeding, breast changes, or new skin reactions.
